How to Delete Vtec Oil Pressure Sensor

Deleting the VTEC oil pressure sensor on a Honda Civic is usually done when tuning an engine with an aftermarket ECU that does not require the sensor. However, keep in mind that removing the sensor may disable VTEC unless properly bypassed in the ECU settings.

Steps to Delete the VTEC Oil Pressure Sensor

Tools & Materials Needed:

10mm wrench or socket

Wire cutters & electrical tape (if modifying wiring)

Honda VTEC oil pressure sensor plug (optional)

Honda tuning software (Hondata, Neptune, etc.)

Step 1: Locate the Sensor

The VTEC oil pressure sensor is located near the VTEC solenoid on the cylinder head, typically on B-series, D-series, H-series, and K-series engines.

It’s a small sensor with a single wire or two-wire connector.

Step 2: Remove the Sensor

Unplug the wiring connector.

Use a 10mm wrench or socket to remove the sensor from the VTEC solenoid housing.

If needed, replace it with a threaded plug (commonly 1/8 NPT or M12x1.25, depending on engine type).

Step 3: Modify Wiring (If Necessary)

Some OBD1 & OBD2 Honda ECUs require a signal from the oil pressure sensor to activate VTEC.

If using a chipped or standalone ECU (like Hondata S300 or Neptune), disable the VTEC oil pressure check in the software.

If keeping the stock ECU, splice the two sensor wires together to create a bypass signal. (Check wiring diagrams for your specific model.)

Step 4: Reassemble & Test

Ensure there are no oil leaks from the sensor port.

Start the car and check for VTEC engagement (usually around 5,000-5,500 RPM, depending on the tune).

If using a tuned ECU, confirm in software that the sensor check is disabled.

Important Notes:

If deleting the sensor on a stock ECU, a check engine light (CEL - code P1259) may appear, causing VTEC to disable.

Tuning software is required to properly delete the sensor without causing driveability issues.

Consider keeping the sensor if running a stock or lightly modified setup to monitor oil pressure correctly.
